Character Background

• History: Here.
• Core Relationships:

UZUMAKI NARUTO: Naruto is one of Sakura’s closest friends, and she will defend him no matter how crazy he may sometimes get. Their friendship started off where Sakura, like many other people in the town, found him annoying, lazy, and lacking. She didn’t initially treat him very kindly and was prone to insulting him. She even went so far as to insult him being an orphan in front of Sasuke to try and make herself look cool. This backfired with Sasuke putting her in her place. Then when Kakashi was trying to teach them the meaning of teamwork, she began to give him more of a chance. She watched him grow stronger and watching him grow stronger made her want to grow stronger.

Naruto had a long standing crush on Sakura, a fact that often annoyed her. She does sometimes use this to manipulate him, for example begging him to bring back Sasuke when Sasuke leaves the village. Over time she comes to care for him and love him, though not romantically, and she gains a huge amount of respect for him, which leads her to be very protective. Eventually, in order to protect him from the promise she pushed him into with Sasuke, she lies to him and tells him that she’s in love with him, as she wants to protect him from that promise and being hurt by Sasuke. It never really works though and he continues to pursue bringing Sasuke home, for all of their sakes.

During the war, she risks herself to protect Naruto regularly, and wants to prove to him she’s as strong as he is. In his eyes, it seems that there is never anything to prove, and he becomes one of her strongest supporters. He trusts her with his life and she doesn’t let him down, going to extensive lengths to save his life. This is seen in particular, when his heart stops beating and she makes an incision in his side and manually keeps his heart pumping until she can properly treat him.

After the war she is very invested in making sure that Naruto is happy and encourages his feelings for Hinata, in the same way that he encourages her ongoing affection for Sasuke. She encourages him to recognize and believe in his feelings for Hinata and helps him move towards rescuing Hinata when she is in trouble. She also continues to support his goals of becoming Hokage, helping him every step of the way. She truly comes to cherish him by her canon point and she loves him deeply. Where once she was the first person to punch him if he stepped out of line or annoyed her, she’ll defend him against anything. Likewise, he’s helped her grow into the woman she is and encouraged her path towards becoming a truly powerful ninja.

UCHIHA SASUKE: Perhaps the most critical character to her entire story, for better or worse, is Uchiha Sasuke. From a very young age Sakura had romantic feelings for him. When she’s younger her crush kind of blinds her to a lot of what’s going on around her and borders on obsessive in the way she expresses it. That comes more from being a young teenager and being drawn to him in a way that she’s not really capable of maturely expressing yet. It gets in the way of her friendship with Ino, as they become rivals and fight over him.

Things start to shift as they work together on the same team and she is forced to see him as a real person, with real feelings. As she gets to know him, she starts to care about him as an individual and they form a friendship. Her feelings don’t disappear, but rather change and mature over time, even within the couple of years that they are on team seven. Likewise, where Sasuke found her annoying early on, he grew to care for her too. They begin to form a strong connection as teammates. This is seen multiple times, such as during the chuunin exams after he is attacked by Orichimaru. While in pain, he leans into her, clinging to her, while he suffers with the curse mark. When she is injured, he grows so angry that he is ready to kill whoever hurt her. He also saves her from falling, and it is often her who he leans on for physical support when injured. She is also able to make his curse mark “retreat” by hugging him from behind, calming him down. These situations as teammates solidify a bond between them that never fully goes away, despite him becoming a villain in the series.

Seeing how strong he was becoming and seeing how much he suffers, are two of the main reasons that she seeks out training from Tsunade to catch up to him and to help him. She wants to become an equal fighter at first so she can join Naruto in bringing him back. Her love for him grows and becomes far less naive and selfish before eventually becoming so selfless that she ends up agreeing to be the one to kill him because she thinks she’s the only one who can get close enough and she wants to set him free from the pain that she knows he’s under. Ultimately, she’s unable to carry it out, and it sets them at worse odds with each other for a time.

Despite the bad things that he’s doing and the people that he’s killing, she has a hard time letting go of her love for him and the Sasuke she knew. She’s also quick to see every moment where there is a hint of the Sasuke that she remembers, and she holds onto those moments, never losing hope that she can convince him of her feelings. He seems to have a hard time forgetting her as well, and everytime that they cross paths, even in larger groups, she’s often the first person that he addresses.

During the 4th Shinobi War, when team seven is restored and Sasuke rejoins them briefly, she believes that he’s back for good. He protects her during the war, catching her when she nearly passes out. When he switches sides (again), she is devastated, begging him to stop. She shouts to him another love confession and he’s seen to hesitate, before he puts her under a genjutsu to stop her from continuing or getting in the way. But after his fight with Naruto doesn’t go as planned and she shows up to heal them, he looks at her fondly and offers a true apology. This makes her cry, but she knows and trusts that his apology is true. She sees him off when he leaves the village and he promises to return to her with an intimate tap to the forehead. Despite their distance over the next two years, she trusts her feelings for him and has a renewed trust in his feelings for her, though she is sometimes confused by where they stand.

Outside of romance, one thing that Sasuke plays a huge role in, as far as her character development goes, is that his story and what happened to him (as well as Naruto), lead her to create a mental health facility for children who are impacted by the war. She has seen a lot of suffering from a lot of people, but she doesn’t want what happened to Sasuke and Naruto to happen to a new set of children. She wants to encourage children suffering from trauma to talk openly about what they are feeling and wants adults to basically take care of them so that they are not left abandoned to handle their immature feelings alone.

HATAKE KAKASHI: Assigned to work with Kakashi after her graduation from the Ninja Academy, their relationship is one of great importance to her. So much backstory, but there was a girl on Kakashi’s team when he was young and training with whom he had a close relationship and it’s remarked on often that Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura remind him of himself and his teammates, Obito and Rin. Because of this he is deeply protective of them and wants to protect them and their team dynamic. Rin died in his arms and so he feels particularly protective of Sakura. Sakura knows that he’ll do anything he can to protect her and he stands up for her on repeated occasions.

Despite the doubt she has in herself, Kakashi sees a huge amount of potential within her and he does everything he can to nurture that potential and encourage its growth. He doesn’t ever go easy on her, despite his tendency to be protective of her. Of their team, Kakashi is the one who initially recognizes that she has the best chakra control, remarking that she could become highly skilled in genjutsu if she was inclined. He wants to see her continue to use it and continue to grow with it and encourages her to seek out more training to do just that. Kakashi also is the one who teaches Team 7 the importance of teamwork and relying on others. During his initial test with them, he helps Sakura to realize that she is solely focused on Sasuke for her own selfish reasons and ignoring helping Naruto when she easily could have. His lessons are the first step to her learning to think about the world differently and to put her faith in her teammates.

TSUNADE: Sakura is Tsunade’s disciple, so Tsunade is not only someone of great importance to Sakura, but also an individual who has challenged her and helped her grow. Much of what she is from her canon point can be traced to the laborious training that Tsunade put her under for over two years. It was Sakura who went to Tsunade and asked her to make her her student. Sakura is recognized as one of the greatest medical-nins in the world because of her training.

Under Tsunade, she not only learns a multitude of medical techniques and jutsu, but she also learns emotional control. Before her training under Tsunade, Sakura was highly emotionally impulsive and unpredictable. She has a whole inner world of emotional chaos that is often seen on screen in outbursts she -attempts- to keep to herself. This shows up in the form of an inner identity (inner Sakura), but during the course of her training, that inner self is put aside as she learns to self-comfort and get in touch with her broader range of feelings. Tsunade helps to teach her when to restrain herself and when to let loose, which leads her to greater success in battles.

Sakura approaches Tsunade because she wants to be different, wants to be better, and wants to be a worthy ninja. She wants to be able to fight in battles, rather than needing to be rescued or hiding herself in the background because she is too scared to do things. So already when she approaches Tsunade for training, she is growing and maturing in her desire to recognize that she needs to get stronger. It’s quickly said that Sakura will surpass Tsunade, and she is definitely on that path. It’s made clear when during the Fourth Shinobi War, she manages to do a technique called the “Strength of a Hundred Seal”, which allows the user to perform techniques without wasting their energy and it amplifies their chakra control and power. She is also able to summon Katsuyu and the only other person who can summon this powerful entity is Tsunade herself. Tsunade is incredibly proud of how quickly Sakura manages to summon her.

The main focus of their training was medical ninjutsu though and Sakura grew to be a powerful medical-nin because of that training. She can perform everything from simple healing techniques and the treatment of poison, to extensive surgical procedures, making her invaluable on the battlefield and off of it. She even picked up some of her less savory skills such as gambling, though Sakura never becomes addicted to it, she watched her master gamble and drink so much that she picked up a few of her gambling tricks. Needless to say, Tsunade and the relationship Sakura has with her are instrumental in her growth from being a fearful and emotional child, to a thriving adult who is world renowned in her medical prowess.

YAMANAKE INO: Ino is Sakura’s childhood friend and rival. Sakura was a bit of a loner as a kid and she dealt with a lot of feelings of insecurity surrounding her looks. Ino gave her a hair ribbon to hold her hair off her face to help her feel pretty and that began their friendship. Things went downhill when they realized they both had feelings for the same person, Sasuke, and their close friendship changed to something more antagonistic. Sakura returned the ribbon and they started throwing insults at each other and fighting for Sasuke’s attention.

Over the course of the series Ino and Sakura have many ups and downs and yet, despite their tendency to fight and disagree, when things get hard they fall back on their friendship. For example, when Sakura has to roughly cut her long hair (something she was truly proud of) in the middle of battle, it’s Ino who jumps in to help cut it into a nice short hairstyle. She calls out Sakura’s vanity, but she always helps her to feel beautiful. Likewise, Sakura helps Ino be stronger, and when Ino asks to join her in her tutelage under Tsunade, Sakura encourages the idea and they begin training together.

They’ve both been through the Fourth Great Shinobi War together and by the end of the series, their differences have been put aside, and they are back to being close friends. They support each other and call each other out as necessary. Their romantic rivalry has ended, as Ino backed off from Sasuke when he went rogue, and when she forms an affection for Sai, Sakura encourages her to pursue it. She’s happy to see Ino happy, and has some of her own jealousy towards her relationship because while she never lets go of her feelings for Sasuke, she envies her friend’s ability to participate in a more active and involved romance.

From her canon point, Ino has returned to, and remains someone who holds Sakura accountable to her actions, teases her playfully, and supports her ongoing growth. She supports her growth in medicine, life, and romance. Likewise Sakura has grown to no longer begrudge her friend’s growth and the support she offers Ino, at this point, shows how she’s grown up and let go of her need to constantly compete to be the better woman and ninja. Their friendship is a central part to her growth and learning to be less combative over superficial disagreements. She’s learned to pick and choose her battles and it’s taught her what is and isn’t important to friendship.

SAI: In canon he is considered one of the few who can tell when Sakura is faking it and he neither holds it against her or tries to change her, making himself a solid sounding board and good friend. Their relationship, however, takes time to build and gets off to a rocky start. She first meets Sai when he is assigned to team seven as it’s third member sometime after Sasuke had abandoned the village. No one who replaced Sasuke was ever going to receive a warm welcome from Sakura, but Sai’s bluntness didn’t help with their initial meeting. She attempts to keep an open mind, but Sai is blunt and insults not only her, but also Sasuke. When he insults Sasuke, he invokes her wrath and she punches him. This distrust initially only grows as he eventually betrays team seven and even ignores Sakura when she nearly falls to her death.

Despite this initial distrust and distaste in Sai, Sakura is forgiving by nature and when he rejoins their team, she approaches him and his situation with empathy, which starts to heal their rocky start. They don’t necessarily see eye to eye on things all the time, and Sakura can be put off by his demeanor (such as when he compliments Ino), but he does win her trust and they become closer over the years, especially as he forms a romance with her best friend, Ino.

Sai comes to know her well enough to pick up on her true feelings, even when she’s not being fully honest about them, so she has a hard time hiding what she’s thinking and feeling from him. This suggests that she kind of needs some of that bluntness that she was initially turned off by. He is also the person who tells her directly that she’s causing Naruto a lot of pain when she tries to tell him that she loves him, even though she doesn’t. His willingness to speak openly and honestly with her helps her to see some of her issues and as embarrassed and annoyed by him as she can sometimes get, she uses this to grow and stop some of her painful behavior towards others.

SASORI AND CHIYO: Akatsuki member Sasori, and his grandmother Chiyo aren’t characters that Sakura spends a great deal of time with, however they are pivotal to her growth. Chiyo accompanies Sakura on a mission to save Gaara, who had been taken captive by the Akatsuki. On this rescue mission, she and Chiyo come face to face with Sasori who has a bunch of fancy puppet techniques and one of the elongated battles ensues.

What makes this particular battle so critical to Sakura and her development is that really up to this point, she’s been spending a lot of time standing in the background and letting other people do the fighting. She’s spent the last couple of years training with Tsunade and much of her training involves medical ninjutsu. During the battle, she ends up poisoned and Chiyo assists her in healing herself. One thing that Sakura has been working on is creating antidotes to poison and she is able to create an antidote for the poison that Sasori uses, to which is very impressed. So this battle showcases that Sakura is not the same frightened young girl who takes the backseat during battles and lets other people take the lead. She’s not only become strong, she’s become strong enough to take down a member of the Akatsuki.

It also showcases her compassion and her appreciation of family bonds. The fight focuses heavily on Sasori and Chiyo and their relationship and how Sasori became the puppet master villain that he did. The fight leads to the deaths of both Sasori and Chiyo and those bonds are a draw for her. After Sasori is dead, she tries to save Chiyo’s life, being told by the other woman that her life is too valuable and to not risk it for a woman of her age. Sakura is willing to try and go to the ends of the world to protect those she has come to care about, and she needs the reminder that sometimes saving a life isn’t the most important thing. This helps her learn to balance her priorities. In the end, she takes the time to attend Chiyo’s funeral, grieving for the woman before moving on.

KARIN: Though Karin and Sakura’s relationship is more prominent as they get older (such as Karin is the person who ends up helping Sakura deliver her child), there is a really prominent scene in the series that sets up their future relationship and showcases who Sakura is. In one of the painful reunions between Sasuke and Sakura, Karin is present. Sakura is trying to make Sasuke believe that she wants to leave everyone behind and join his team, which is a lie, but Sasuke calls her bluff. After seriously injuring Karin, he orders Sakura to kill her.

Sakura is trying to figure out how to best strike Sasuke, while she looks down, contemplating what he’s just asked her to do. Despite being on the opposite team, Karin sees that Sasuke is about to strike Sakura from behind and warns her. When she gets the chance, Sakura heals Karin, reassuring her that she’ll be okay. So despite being an enemy, Sakura manages to break through some of Karin’s shell and her willingness to heal and protect her goes a long way towards their eventual friendship. It’s another example of how Sakura does not see the world as black and white, nor does she see people as good or bad. She is willing to forgive their transgressions and willing to heal them no matter what crimes they’ve committed.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

Positive:

INTELLIGENT & ANALYTICAL: Sakura is incredibly intelligent. She gets very high test scores, and easily passes the written portion of the genin exam which genin were not expected to be able to do. She's quick to pick up on her opponent's tactics, while letting enemies think they are smarter than her before she ends up one upping them in the end. She brings this intelligence to everything she does. It helps her to perform at high levels as a medical ninja and makes her a quick study under Tsunade's teaching. She even learns Tsunade's summon and harder jutsus at a rate that draws a lot of attention.

POLITE: Sakura is a very polite individual. She uses honorifics, bows to teachers, tries to listen to elders. Until she becomes more familiar with people, such as the team leader Kakashi, she is more formal than her other teammates wanting to impress and show her respect for the leadership of others. This helps her to navigate many tricky conversations among those she might not see eye to eye. She brings this politeness to her work and the deep respect that she shows for other and her work, helps others warm up to her.

DETERMINED: Sakura is very determined and this sets her up for success. Every time she feels like she's not good enough or that she wants to be better, it's her drive to improve that comes out. This determination pushes her to dedicate herself to learning from Tsunade so that she can catch up with Naruto and Sasuke. Even when she is faced with a situation that she doesn't like, she still uses that determination to move forward, such as when she makes the decision that she needs to be the one to take Sasuke's life to protect the village and everyone else she loves. There are many times where she pushes herself past her limit purely because she's that determined, such as when she was trying to rescue Sasuke from another dimension, or when she was trying to save Naruto's life and used her hand to keep his heart beating.

RESPONSIBLE: Sakura is a very responsible individual and takes her responsibilities very seriously. During the Fourth Shinobi War, she is relied on by the whole army to take the lead on healing. She's the head of a medical team and responsible for a variety of very intensive medical procedures, include creating antidotes for poison. She also takes on responsibilities for Tsunade when she's Hokage, making sure that she doesn't drink or gamble all her money away. After the war, she takes on the responsibility of creating an entirely new method of treating trauma among youth. There is little end to how much work Sakura is willing to do and she takes it on in a way that is responsible and successful.

EMPATHETIC: Sakura has a lot of empathy and this empathy allows her to see things in a way that is not just black and white. While others find it easy to dismiss Sasuke as he commits crimes, it takes Sakura a long time before she can accept what he's doing, and not because she is unwilling to hold him accountable, but because she never loses sight of who he is beyond his actions. She shows this same empathy to Naruto as she gets to know him, and she shows it to Karin, despite her being an enemy. Sakura has a large heart for the suffering of the world. Eventually this leads her to create an entire new system to treat those who suffer from PTSD. So she uses her compassion for them to build a new course of mental health treatment, with what is basically a program for grieving children.

LOYAL: Loyal, perhaps to a fault, Sakura is unwavering her affections and support for those loves. She always supports Naruto and never loses faith in him even when he's acting like an idiot. She doesn't stop believing that Sasuke is capable of redemption. She protects her team and struggles with letting Sai in as a replacement because of how loyal she is to her team, however once she grows comfortable and comes to trust Sai, she showcases great loyalty to him as well. She's even loyal to Ino, amidst their struggles. At the lowest points in their friendship, she will still defend and stand up for her friend. She's also loyal to whatever cause she stands up for, even when she doubts it, for the greater good. This is seen in her willingness to kill Sasuke, despite how much she does not want to.

Negative:

QUICK-TEMPRED:Sakura has a very quick temper, particularly earlier on in the series. Some of that softens as she gets older, but she continues to have moments where her temper gets the best of her. She's often seen punching characters who annoy her or embarrass her. Naruto probably gets punched in the face more than anyone else, but she also punches her teammate Sai. Ironically, she hits Sai for insulting Naruto at one point, so her true feelings aren't really lined up with her temper.

SELF-CONSCIOUS: From the time that she's really young, Sakura suffers from feeling very self conscious. She tends to focus on physical looks and she feels like hers don't measure up. This can lead her to seem a bit superficial such as when she grows her hair long and nearly ends up getting killed because an enemy grips hold of her. She also constantly doubts her skills and feels inferior to those around her such as Naruto, Sasuke, Ino, etc.

SELF-CENTERED: While this eases up as she gets older and matures, Sakura has a tendency to be focused on her own interests and how the things around her impact her. This can lead to some callous behavior, such as when she insults Naruto for being an orphan to Sasuke. Compared to the two of them, she leads a privileged life and really doesn't see how good she has it. Even her love of Sasuke can sometimes land her in a cycle of being self centered, such as when she makes Naruto promise to bring Sasuke back without considering his feelings.

ANXIOUS: Though, many of Sakura's anxieties are pretty fair considering the world she lives in and the situations she faces, she has a tendency to worry constantly. She spends a great deal of time worrying about Naruto and Sasuke even when they prove themselves capable. She worries that Sasuke isn't going to come home from his travels. She also worries constantly about whether or not she has the skills to protect the people she loves. This worry can lead her to distraction or paralyze her within her fears, making it hard for her to move forward or move on.

PERVERTED: Though this might not necessarily be a completely negative trait, it can get in the way of her being productive. There are many scenes that show that Sakura is pretty perverted and gets distracted by sex and romance. When Konohamaru does a jutsu to show Sasuke/Sai together, she gets a nosebleed. She also lashes out at him for the experience, showcasing her temper. She's often very distracted by her attraction to Sasuke and it can make it hard for her to focus on the things she should be focused on, like fighting. It can take her a bit to pull it back in when she's lost in some daydream or dealing with a nosebleed.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers:

CHAKRA: Sakura's best skill is her chakra control and has been since part 1. Kakashi notes she would be a powerful genjutsu user because of her ability to control her chakra, but she's never shown actually learning to do genjutsu in the series. She is shown breaking powerful genjutsus of others however, such as Itachi and Sasuke, when they use it against her or her teammates. She can build up her chakra in her fists and create a great deal of strength, sometimes without even meaning to. Sakura was taught how to use the Strength of a Hundred Seal by Tsunade, which allows her to amass large amounts of chakra and store it for later use. When the Seal is activated, she can then access all of the chakra she has accumulated to perform techniques with greater skill and strength. She can also channel her chakra to detect traps, threats, and hidden areas.
TAIJUTSU: Taijutsu is a form of basic martial arts. Sakura is a highly skilled kunoichi when it comes to taijutsu from a young age. She is shown holding her own against Ino, who is one of the top of the class when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, and after her training with Tsunade, she is even more powerful. Many of her ninjutsus are rooted in her physical strength and have clear influence from her strong abilities with taijutsu. She was able to destroy many of Sasori's puppets with only her taijutsu abilities and she is able to go up against someone who has the Mangekyo Sharingan when she is older and win.
NATURE TRANSFORMATIONS/NINJUTSU: Sakura has multiple different forms of ninjutsu that she can use, mostly focusing in Earth, Water, Yin, and Yang releases. She is not as proficient in ninjutsu as she is in taijutsu, despite her chakra control, but one area that she is shown to have particularly strong techniques with is in fuinjutsu, which is a sealing technique. Sakura uses cherry-blossom shaped seals that she attaches to an enemy and when released, these seals turn into red strings that fully bind a person in place so they can not move.
SUMMONING TECHNIQUE: Sakura is able to summon Katsuyu, a giant slug who has a number of healing abilities. She can use her in battle, but most notably, she was able to have Katsuyu split into multiple pieces where she could then remotely use her chakra through her to heal those who were injured on the battlefield all at once.
MEDICAL NINJUTSU: Sakura's main focus is in medical ninjutsu. Because it requires a strong chakra control, Tsunade knew that Sakura was a perfect candidate for training. Tsunade taught Sakura how to heal fatal injuries. She is able to do surgeries and directly heal vital organs, such as when Naruto is dying after having the Kyubi extracted from him and she keeps him alive by reaching into his chest and keeping his heart beating. She can extract poison from the body and heal it at the same time to help people recover from being severely poisoned. In the anime, she is shown to be able to regenerate parts of a persons body if the wound is fresh enough, though this seems to only apply to missing chunk of non-major body parts and not things like limbs. When using the Strength of a Hundred Seal, Sakura is also able to use her medical ninjutsu to instantly heal herself so she doesn't have to stop in the middle of battle to tend to her wounds. Sakura is also medically trained in non-jutsu forms of medicine, can perform autopsies, and has a strong understanding of genetics. She was made the head of the medical department after the war and she by her canon point, has started to make a wing for children who have suffered from PTSD so they are no longer neglected by Konoha.

• Blood Type: Paleblood
• Omen: Otter
• Blessed Day: March 28
• Patron Pthumerian: Moss King: Sakura is used to dealing with people who love inserting gambling into everything in life and would likely approach the Moss King in the same way she approached Tsunade, trying to use the gambling to her advantage. Otherwise she would not feel very connected to the Moss King or his message and would probably find their unwillingness to see good or bad in anything frustrating.
• Blood Power Manifestation: Sakura's blood powers will manifest through tactile empathy/telepathy, being able to see/feel peoples emotions, or strong memories they may be having if she touches their skin. I'm thinking something along the lines of Yuri in Fatal Frame V, where she has difficulty controlling it at first and learns the longer she has it how to stop herself from getting glimpses from people unexpectedly when she touches them.
